CONFERENCE 2018 – 2023: THE BOOM OF ADULT ANIMATION IN IBEROAMERICA

Analysis of the recent boom in animation not suitable for children in the fields of short films, series and feature films, of the prevailing trends in the main production markets, of the reception at the box office and of the commitment of television stations and platforms. It will also include a review of emblematic works and a brief, very brief history of animation for adults in the region.
Ray Laguna is the director of the Spanish website animacionparaadultos.es. Screenwriter, playwright and journalist, he has also been programmer of the Animasivo festival (Mexico) and editor of the research magazine Con A de animación. As a journalist, he has written for El Diario Vasco, LatAm cinema, Soul Nation, Renderout!, Enlace Funk, Hip Hop Nation and Beatburger, among other publications, and has collaborated with the podcasts Pobre Pierrot and En franca decadencia.

From May 8th to 21st, the finalists for best school short film and the finalists for best short film of this sixth edition of the Quirino Awards will be available on the Retina Latina and Filmin platforms: “Garbage Man”, directed by Laura Gonçalves and produced by Bando à Parte (Portugal); “Ice Merchants”, directed by João Gonzalez and produced by Cola Animation, Wild Stream, Royal College Of Art (Portugal, co-production with France, UK); and “Passenger”, directed by Juan Pablo Zaramella and produced by JPZtudio (Argentina); “Carlos Montaña”, directed by Ita Romero, Universidad Nacional de Córdoba (Argentina); “Chimborazo”, directed by Keila Cepeda, Universitat Politècnica de València (Spain, Ecuador); and “Papirola”, directed by Fabián Molinaro, Universitat Politècnica de València (Spain).
*Retina Latina is a digital platform to watch Latin American cinema, public, free and legal access for citizens of Latin America and the Caribbean, with part of its collection open to everyone. The platform is composed of film entities from Bolivia, Ecuador, Mexico, Peru and Uruguay under the coordination of the Directorate of Cinematography of the Ministry of Culture of Colombia. With a somewhat unusual trajectory where flexibility, adaptability and creativity have always been a priority, award-winning Colombian director and animator Simón Wilches-Castro has managed to position himself within the industry in Los Angeles, where he works as creative director of special projects at Titmouse Studios. His training as a freelance animator has allowed him to adapt to different projects, including the animation direction of Marvel’s WandaVision series, Apple TV’s Everlight, the animated video for Dua Lipa’s Hallucinate and Charlie Kaufman’s I’m Thinking of Ending Things. He has directed the musical The Emperor’s Newest Clothes for HBO, several pieces for The Gates Foundation and made a One Direction smut fiction for the show Euphoria. His independent approach to his commercial projects has led to his projects and films being screened at the world’s most important festivals, which have earned him several awards and recognitions, including two Adobe Design Awards, two Annie Award nominations and two nominations as a regional finalist for the Academy Award for students, in addition to six consecutive official selections at the Annecy Festival, three shortlists at the ADC Awards and the award for Best Music Video at the Chitose New Airport Festival, among others.

Thanks to its international projection, the Quirino will also host the meeting of the animation working group of European public broadcasters. Organized by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) with the collaboration of RTVE, this meeting will be attended by representatives of RAI KIDS (Italy), YLE (Finland), RTP (Portugal), BBC Kids (UK), KIKA (Germany), RTK (Kosovo), TRM (Moldova), LTV (Latvia) and LRT (Lithuania).

In parallel to the Forum, the Quirino Awards will serve as a framework for two professional activities that will focus on public television stations and their role in the development of animation projects, as well as on different cross-border cooperation mechanisms.
After the positive balance of the first meeting held in 2022, Premios Quirino will once again bring together in San Cristóbal de La Laguna a group of Ibero-American public broadcasters to reflect on their programming, acquisition and co-production policies for animated content. Representatives from Pakapaka (Argentina), TVN Chile (Chile), RTP (Portugal), Canal Capital (Colombia), Señal Colombia and Canal IPE (Peru) will be present at the second edition of this meeting organized in collaboration with Radiotelevisión Española (RTVE).
